‘Big Hairy Audacious Goals’ and the Importance of Being Professionally Engaged
If you have not read Good to Great, by Jim Collins, I would recommend it as a must business read. Jim introduced Big Hairy Audacious (BHAG) goals, a BHAG is a compelling goal that you work toward that is engaging, motivating, energizing and will help you retain a high level of focus until you reach the finish line.
I encourage all businesses to have a BHAG, and individuals to set a professional and personal BHAG for one-, three-, five-, ten-, or twenty-five years out. As I am 52, I have a professional and personal BHAG that is three years out that I intend to achieve at the magical age of 55 – do you have a professional and personal BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOAL?
For example:
- Become an $X M company by 2023.
- Transform the company from X into one of the preeminent Y companies globally.
- Own a Porsche (personally, I would prefer a Vespa however, I am getting opposition from my inner circle on this as I am not the most coordinated person in Vancouver!) by year’s end.
- Buy a holiday getaway on the Sunshine Coast in 2023.
- Have a minimum annual income of $X00,000 pa.
- Live one quarter per year in the South Pacific (once travel restrictions lift).
- …you get the idea.
Everything I do outside of my consulting business goals refer to my professional and personal BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOALS. It provides me with a clear context on the decisions I make and enables me to implement strategies to utilize my time effectively and with purpose.
TWO KEY BUSINESS BOOKS THAT I ENCOURAGE YOU TO READ:
1. Good to Great ~ Jim Collins
2. Mastering the Rockefeller Habits 2.0. Scaling Up. How a Few Companies Make It.. and Why the Rest Don’t ~ Verne Harnish
