Bare with me while I share some personal information, and yes promise, it will link back to your professional journey.
My daughter and I recently traveled to Australia to surprise my mother for her 85th birthday. It was a brief one-week stay, however one that I could not miss as it was such a milestone birthday.
I am fortunate as my mother is my best friend, mentor and continually inspires me to be on my ‘A’ game and always strive to be a better person. She raised four children, is the very proud grandmother of six, great-grandmother of one and was married to her soulmate for 60 years. Above all, she always has nuggets of useful information, lessons to share, inspire and motivate.
Born in 1934, she grew up in a blended family post the Great Depression. A strong, resilient, caring and kind individual; attributes we all aspire to possess. She can recall so many events, the following not all but some to put this period into perspective:
- 1945 WWII armistice
- 1963 Martin Luther King’s famous ‘I have a dream’ speech and John F. Kennedy’s assassination
- 1969 Neil Armstrong stepping foot on the moon.
- 1975 ending of the Vietnam War
- 1981 learning of the global AIDS crisis
- 1989 the fall of the Berlin Wall
- 1991 release of the World Wide Web
- 1994 Rwandan genocide
- 1999 the anticipated threat of the Y2K bug
- 2001 September 11th attacks
- 2003 the beginning of the Iraq War
- 2009 Obama’s inauguration, and
- 2019 the most recent terror attacks on mosques in New Zealand.
